Overview

Mt. Dhaulagiri, at 8,167m, is the seventh highest peak in the world. This spectacular peak’s name means the “White Mountain”. The Dhaulagiri Expedition lasts almost 7 weeks (47 Days) and costs USD 14,600 per person for Full Expedition Service (Spring) and USD 8,500 for Base Camp Service (Spring). Climbing Mt. Dhaulagiri can be done via a number of routes; however the normal route is the Northeast Ridge.

Mt. Dhaulagiri was first attempted by a French team in 1950 but they abandoned their bid in favour of Annapurna I. Mt. Dhaulagiri was the last 8,000m peak in Nepal to be climbed. In 1960 a Swiss team successfully climbed the northeast spur. Supplied by a small glacier plane piloted by Ernst Saxer, the expedition finally ended the golden decade of Nepal’s giants by putting four Europeans and two Sherpas on the summit on 13th May 1960.

Dhaulagiri Expedition Northeast Ridge Climbing Route Map
  • Camp 1: We will establish Camp 1 for Dhaulagiri Expedition at 5,900m on the Col east from the ABC. Along this trail, there is a high risk of avalanche fall and crevasses, so you must be wide aware of risk and difficulties.
  • Camp 2: Camp 2 will be set up at 6,400m after some steep climbing sections from Camp 1. Here climbing Sherpas will guide you as you need some technical climbing experience and need to climb up using the fixed ropes. As usual, you need one technical Ice Axe if you have one Private Sherpa with you, else you need two Ice Axe.
  • Camp 3: We will set up Camp 3 (7400m) along the ridge of the mountain, located towards the west with steep ice and snow climbing. Heading towards Camp 3 there will be frequent ups and downs. We have to climb towards the East Ridge, where strong wind may challenge us before reaching Camp 3. This is the most difficult part of the Dhaulagiri Expedition.
  • We will try a direct push for the summit and return to Camp 3, it all conditions, weather, permits us. For safe landing. we will set up a fallback camp at 7,900 m in order to attempt another summit push the next day.
